 Ricercar, ricercare (from French/Italian: To seek, to research). Am instrumental composition of the 16th and 17th centuries, of which 2 varieties existed concurrently: a rhapsodic type in homophonic texture and a polyphonic type that exploits learned contrapuntal artifices and is a recursor of the fugue.
